31 days underwater in 2014
Can you give me a sense of the science that can be done when your stay underwater for extended periods of time?
My team and so were able to execute of equivalent science as opposed being based on a ship above. And that has a lot to do with the access to the bottom world. By being based in an underwater habitat, it’s a very unique platform, a very unique tool. In the case of being saturer, we can dive 10 to 12h each of us, per day, taking advantage of that. To be able to much more research in a workday than coming from the surface.
Additionally, having human beings being in the ocean final frontier, you’re able to do things that are not easily accessible from an ROV, AUV or submersible. But there is still a human factor that needs to be integrated into the mission.
With mission 31, we were able to use all sorts of laboratory equipment that are normally relegated to a laboratory on land and bring them back down
At the bottom of the sea.
? You are raising money for a new underwater habitat called “Proteus”. How different from the ones before and why do we need it now?
With proteus we are talking about a space that is 10 times that of Aquarius and team that is twice the size of any team deployed underwater, about a dozen people. With that we will be testing the psychological and physiological parameters which should be conducive to deploy people for long periods of time underwater. Not days or weeks which has been done many times before, but weeks, months and maybe even longer.
I anticipate a platform like Proteus, to give us a lot more advanced technology on site on the final frontier at the bottom of the sea so our team can do all of that research right there in real time. In the case like viral pandemics, to be able to take those chemical compositions of those sets of samples. Right now, they’re on site, analyse, replicate them, accelerate the research process, rather than having to send that sample to the surface, having potentially get corrupted and send half way around the world in a freezer or locker for months if not years before it gets analyser
